A safety file is a collection of documents and information that are compiled by an organization to demonstrate that they are taking adequate steps to manage workplace health and safety risks.

The hierarchy of controls is a system for controlling risk in the workplace. It has five levels of actions to reduce or remove hazard, ranked from the most effective to the least effective:

  1. Elimination
  2. Substitution
  3. Engineering Controls
  4. Administrative Controls
  5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Although PPE cannot protect you against fatalities, it can give you a form of protection against potential hazards and injuries for example skin contact with chemicals can be eliminated by wearing the correct overall and gloves.

The purpose of a safety file is to help organizations identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate controls to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace.

A trained employee is a safe employee. When attending initial induction training at the mine, your knowledge on important mining / engineering factors and tips broaden and you are made aware of the correct ways to perform tasks. When doing additional task specific training for example training on working at heights or working with electrical tool, you are taught the correct and safe way to make use of the equipment to not only ensure your own health and safety but also the health and safety of those around you.

The overall goal is to prevent and reduce health and safety risks of an organization through ensuring that all legal requirements are met, all documentation, risk assessments, medical, training etc are kept up to date and to promote the fluent and efficient way of business.
